The trial of Justin Johnson, charged with the murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, progressed into its third day, with the court witnessing the continuation of testimonies and the unveiling of new evidence. According to WREG, the prosecution presented videos illustrating a timeline that featured Johnson in identical attire to that which he donned during the fatal incident captured by Makedas' surveillance footage.
Significant to Wednesday's proceedings was the testimony of Jermarcus Johnson, Justin's half-brother. In a statement acquired by WREG, Jermarcus recounted how Justin allegedly requested his assistance with a rental car shortly after Young Dolph's shooting. Despite being oblivious to the exact reasons, Jermarcus was then given a vehicle and a phone on which he was instructed to manage Justin's social media and email communications, still unaware that Justin was planning to flee the city.
The prosecution has purported that a high-stakes narrative of revenge and betrayal underpins the murder, with a substantial amount of money fueling the crime. Local Memphis reports that, pursuant to Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy, the hit on Young Dolph was allegedly plotted by Hernandez Govan, who scouted talent for CMG and is said to have also supplied drugs to co-defendant Cornelius Smith.
With a swiftly moving judicial pace, DA Mulroy hinted that the trial might conclude by September 26. The defense, led by attorney Luke Evans, expects to bring Govan to the stand, who is accused of orchestrating the hit. In a separate but related revelation facilitated by breadcrumbs of evidence, 'C' was decoded as Cornelius Smith, with whom Jermarcus helped Justin have three-way calls, according to Jermarcus's account in WREG.
Amidst this complex web of allegations and criminal dealings, Action News 5 has been providing live coverage of the trial, which includes numerous recesses throughout the day. Johnson maintains a not guilty plea against charges of first-degree murder, among other felonies.
