Recent incidents in El Paso County have led law enforcement officials to hold two students accountable for causing undue panic by spreading misinformation about threats to their schools. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the students, whose names have not been disclosed, have been charged with interference with an educational institution and false reporting.

These charges result from a disruptive social media spree where, proudly declaring the importance of school safety, Sheriff Joseph Roybal expressed that “every potential threat is credible until proven otherwise," as noted by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. As posts were incorrectly claimed threats to students and teachers, SROs were scrambled to investigate, inadvertently pulling them from their regular duties and putting stress on the local school communities and law enforcement resources.

"Sadly, due to the decisions of two individuals to spread concerning misinformation, students, parents, and teachers faced unnecessary fear. This incident is a stark reminder of the severe consequences of spreading false information," Sheriff Roybal said, as per El Paso County Sheriff's Office. In the sequence of the events, the officers established the lack of credibility in the threats and pinpointed the sources of the fallacious alerts swiftly.

The Sheriff's press release noted the action taken on these youths. It also highlighted a call upon parents and guardians, to encourage a dialogue with their children to understand the gravity of spreading erroneous information and the crucial role of accurate reporting in school safety. The region, home to numerous school districts, relies on a dedicated team of SROs, comprised of ten officers, affecting 40 schools who, having addressed the immediate incidents, continue to provide vigilance across campuses.
