The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has initiated a major operational overhaul to its toll services, prompting TxTag customers to take action before a looming deadline. As reported by The Austin American-Statesman, TxDOT will be passing the baton of toll collection, billing, and customer service duties to the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA), a seasoned entity with 40 years of experience in managing tolls in the Houston area.
Customers who utilize TxTag should urgently verify their account details, ensuring that contact information, vehicle data, and payment methods are up to date before an October 15 deadline. Accounts that have not been active for the past 12 months are deemed inactive and are disqualified from being transferred – a key fact to consider for those wishing to maintain uninterrupted toll service. Sources like KVUE emphasize that there remains a window for users to re-activate their accounts by reaching out to TxTag customer service before the prescribed cutoff.
While the transference of services is set to provide a tighter focus on customer relations, TxDOT assures that current toll roads and equipment will remain its property, and toll rates, set by the Texas Transportation Commission, will not be impacted. TxTag users can expect to operate their tags just as they have before across Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
It's also worth highlighting that this transition does not equate to a need for new toll tags, as current TxTags will remain functional. But, there is a notice for those with outstanding balances – they may be subject to "escalation actions" if these are not resolved before the transition. Those who opt to shut their accounts down can rest easy knowing any remaining balance will be refunded.
Once the handover is complete, the management of customer accounts will migrate to the HCTRA ecosystem. Facilities for in-person account services will include EZ TAG stores in the Houston area, as well as through select Walmart and H-E-B locations, proving convenience remains a priority in this transition.
