United States Attorney Henry Leventis, who has held the position for the past two years, has submitted his resignation to President Joe Biden, effective from October 4, 2024, as announced in a recent statement. Leventis, who oversaw a staff of 85 federal prosecutors and personnel, has been instrumental in leading various initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety, protecting civil rights, and combating healthcare fraud in the Middle District of Tennessee, which is home to over 2.6 million people and spans 32 counties. "I am eternally grateful to President Biden, Attorney General Garland, and Senators Blackburn and Hagerty for the opportunity to lead the United States Attorney’s Office and to work alongside so many talented and committed public servants," Leventis stated in an announcement obtained by the Department of Justice.
Among the signature achievements under U.S. Attorney Leventis' leadership, were the heavily revamped Project Safe Neighborhoods program in Davidson County and the surge in collaborative efforts with law enforcement to prevent violence in schools and public spaces. The district's prosecutors have also secured significant victories including the takedown of international gangs and local drug trade networks, a notable bust involving hundreds of pounds of narcotics, and a substantial $59 million settlement with eBay over illegal pill presses and counterfeits.
In terms of civil rights, the office, under Leventis' jurisdiction, adopted a proactive stance on safeguarding constitutional freedoms for Tennesseans. This included intervening in a lawsuit against Tennessee's gender-affirming care ban, a case named United States v. Skrmetti, et. al., which is slated to be presented before the Supreme Court later in the year. Additionally, Several public officials were brought to justice for civil rights violations during his tenure. Notably, last month Leventis launched a federal civil rights investigation into the Trousdale Turner Correctional Center, the state's largest prison.
Furthermore, Leventis enacted an assertive approach to cracking down on healthcare fraud. His office prosecuted a range of healthcare professionals and entities, from executives to pharmacists, and settled numerous healthcare fraud cases. These actions underscored his commitment to maintaining integrity within the nation’s healthcare capital. As for future endeavors, Henry Leventis aims to return to private legal practice following his imminent departure from his role as U.S. Attorney.
