The U.S. Coast Guard recently made headlines by intercepting a significant catch of illegally sourced fish off the coast of Texas. In a concerted action taken this Sunday, Coast Guard crews detained 23 Mexican fishermen after finding them with approximately 900 pounds of red snapper and shark. Reports from KENS5 outline that the crews from the Coast Guard's South Padre Island Station, the Cutter Edgar Culbertson, and the Corpus Christi Air Station were involved in the seizure which occurred in federal waters near Southern Texas. These waters are known jurisdictions where lanchas—small fishing boats—are regularly used to not only haul illegal fish but also, at times, to smuggle drugs into the U.S.
Further compounding on the narrative, The Houston Chronicle reports that this seizure adds to a significant total for the year, with over 6,000 pounds of red snapper already confiscated in separate incidents. The red snapper season for anglers officially closed on September 6, making any catches past this date unlawful. The Coast Guard's efforts are described as a measure to decisively combat what Lieutenant Shane Gunderson, Commanding Officer of the South Padre Island station, termed as an environmental and economic threat. "Our Coast Guard crews remain committed to eliminating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in our nation's sovereign waters," Gunderson said in a statement obtained by KENS 5.
When the season is closed, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department mandates it illegal to possess marine life caught in federal waters. For anglers to be in compliance, they are required to carry a Texas fishing license with a saltwater endorsement, irrespective of whether the fishing occurs in state or federal waters. The detained fishermen were turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for further processing, as per the official announcements.
Previous to this incident, the Coast Guard had confiscated another 500 pounds of red snapper along with various fishing paraphernalia.
