In a statement obtained by Local 10, Lt. Matthew Carmine, the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier, commended the joint operation. "Their steadfast efforts, along with those of foreign allies and partner agencies, continue to prove vital to countering drug trafficking organizations and safeguarding the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands," he said.
The Coast Guard Cutter Diligence was the vessel tasked with bringing the haul to shore. Meanwhile, in South Florida, local federal agents announced the arrests of 27 individuals on Friday, in connection with a major cocaine trafficking bust. Among those caught in the net of justice was a South Florida boat racing team owner, as reported by Local 10. This bust highlights both the ongoing drug problem and also the intricate networks in trafficking.
Details further shared by NBC Miami included the total weight of the drugs at over 4,125 pounds. With 11 suspected smugglers now apprehended, and on course for prosecution in federal courts. The gravity of this operation was punctuated by the pride in Lt. Carmine's voice. "I am extremely proud of our crew's tenacity and professionalism, coupled with outstanding coordination with Coast Guard aircrews, during this complex counter-drug mission," he told NBC Miami. Each seizure and arrest marks a small but significant victory.
