Tragedy struck the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community when a 21-year-old national gymnastics champion, Kara Welsh, was fatally shot in an apartment near campus. The incident occurred Friday night, and the Whitewater police have since arrested Chad Richards, a 23-year-old man from Love's Park, Illinois. Richards was apprehended at the scene and is being held at the Walworth County Jail, with charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed forwarded to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office for consideration. This information was provided by police in a Fox32 Chicago report.
According to details released by the Whitewater Police Department, Welsh and the suspect were known to each other and an altercation preceded the tragic event. However, specifics regarding what led to the shooting have not been disclosed, the investigation is ongoing, and police have not made further details available to the public as shared in a statement by NBC Chicago.
Welsh, hailing from Plainfield, Illinois, was a celebrated member of the Warhawk gymnastics team, and rose to prominence last year by winning the individual national title on vault at the NCAA Division III championships. The university's statement reflected on this achievement and shared the profound impact her loss has on the campus community.
Emotions are high on campus as UW-Whitewater Chancellor Corey King said, "We know the news of Kara's death is heartbreaking for our close-knit university community. It is a time when we are all called upon to support one another, to process, and to grieve." The chancellor shared this sentiment in response to the tragedy, as described by NBC Chicago. Additionally, counseling is being provided to the gymnastics team and coaches, with the university's staff offering extra support and flexibility to students in anticipation of the new semester.
The loss was also mourned by the gymnastics team itself, which took to Facebook to express their heartache: "Our hearts are broken with the tragic loss of one of our own." The UW-Whitewater community stands united during this difficult time, drawing together to honor the memory of a star athlete whose life was cut short by this tragic event.
