Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, Wake County Public Libraries are stepping it up with a slew of special events now through October 15, 2024. Over 25 programs designed to highlight Hispanic culture and contributions are set to take place across the county's library locations, with an array of activities ranging from cooking to crafting suitable for all ages.
Shinica Thomas, chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners, shared the sentiment, "This is a great opportunity to recognize the rich culture and incredible accomplishments of Hispanic Americans in our community and beyond." Her comments underline a county-wide initiative to foster appreciation and knowledge of Hispanic heritage. "We encourage everyone to learn about and reflect on the vibrant heritage that strengthens the diversity of Wake County," she continued, according to Wake County's official website.
In complement to the dynamic events, libraries are curating special displays featuring books by Hispanic authors. Interactive programs planned include a dance showcase by Takiri Folclor Academy at Green Road Community Library on October 5, 2024, where attendees can immerse themselves in Latin American dance rhythms, and Herencia 2024—a group exhibition featuring Latino artists from North Carolina running at Oberlin Regional Library through November 8, 2024, with a reception and artist talk on September 25.
Teens have a chance to flaunt their culinary skills at Northeast Regional Library's "Let's Cook Migas Monday" on September 23, while Wendell Community Library offers an artistic outlet with a "Teen Yarn Painting" session on September 28. For the younger crowd, school-age events and bilingual storytimes are scheduled throughout various locations.
