Authorities in Washington D.C. are turning to the community for help in catching a perpetrator of an armed carjacking in the Northeast quadrant. According to The Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred early Sunday morning on the 4400 block of Benning Road.
The victim, who was sitting on his moped at around 2:30 a.m., was accosted by an individual wielding a handgun. In a moment of threatened safety, the suspect demanded the victim's property, which the victim complied with before the suspect took off with the moped. Detailing the encounter, the MPD emphasized the suspect fled the scene on the victim’s moped, a significant piece of personal property now stolen under duress.
As ongoing investigations strive to bring the suspect to justice, the Metropolitan Police Department does not advise the public to engage directly should they spot the person of interest. Instead, they urge anyone with information regarding the suspect or knowledge of the crime to reach out. Information can be relayed by calling the police at (202) 727-9099 or by anonymously texting the tip line at 50411.
Seeking to incentivize potential tipsters, the department has set a reward—up to $10,000 stands to be claimed by anyone whose information leads to an arrest and conviction in this case.
