Early this morning, residents of Parkway Village in Memphis were unsettled when a water main break led to the formation of a sinkhole on Wooddale Avenue. The rupture, occurring near the intersection of Perkins Road, resulted in water forcefully erupting from the ground, impacting a nearby property and a parked car with its spray. As reported by WREG, the incident has affected the water supply to approximately 30 to 35 local customers.
In response to this infrastructure failure, Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has shuttered the water supply to prevent further damage while repairs are actively being made on the scene. MLGW suggested that the restoration of water could take up to eight to nine hours to complete, leaving residents temporarily without this essential service. Meanwhile, the cause behind the sinkhole and water main break remains a mystery, according to a statement obtained by Action News 5.
Woodale Avenue, which stretches between Knight Road and Perkins Road, has been blocked by workers as they toil to resolve the issue. The early morning incident, which occurred at roughly 4 a.m., appears to have fortunately avoided causing significant traffic problems, as determined by the situation around 5:15 a.m. This timing likely mitigated potential disruptions during peak morning hours for commuters in the area.
Not long after the event, FOX13 arrived to document the scene, observing water shooting several feet into the air before authority could, by 6 a.m., shut off. MLGW has informed FOX13 that the completion of repairs might extend throughout the day, and they are working diligently to return service to the affected customers.
