Weekend Road Work, Westbound I-10 Closure Between US 60 and I-17 to Disrupt Phoenix TrafficSource: Google Street View

Prepare for a weekend of detours if you're heading west on Interstate 10 in the Valley, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced a scheduled closure that will impact thousands of motorists. According to information released by ADOT, starting at 10 p.m. tonight, Sept. 6, and continuing until 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, westbound I-10 will be completely closed between US 60 and the I-17 for road work.

Further complicating travel plans are ramp closures including the westbound US 60 to westbound I-10 ramp, the southbound State Route 143 ramp to westbound I-10, and the eastbound I-10 ramp to northbound SR 143, which will create a maze of traffic adjustments for those navigating through the area. Similarly, the westbound I-10 on-ramps at Elliot, Baseline, and Broadway roads, and at 40th and 32nd streets, plus the westbound US 60 on-ramps at McClintock Drive, Rural Road, and Mill Avenue, and the southbound SR 143 on-ramp at University Drive, are closing, so drivers should seek alternative routes or expect prolonged travel times.

ADOT has provided a recommended detour for those affected by the closure: motorists should utilize eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) or US 60 to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway), then westbound on Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) which grants access to southbound SR 143 and westbound I-10 past the closure points. For those aiming for the West Valley, the suggestion is to take Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) west and north to reach I-10 at 59th Avenue, as mentioned by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Travelers headed to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport coming from westbound I-10 or US 60 are advised to reroute using northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway), and follow through to the Sky Harbor Boulevard entrance; the airport is still accessible but will require a small circumvent of the usual passageways.
