The start of the school year in the Yelm school district is on hold as negotiations between Yelm Community Schools and the teachers' union hit an impasse. Yelm Community Schools announced on their website this morning that the first day of school is "postponed until further notice," citing an ongoing strike by teachers over contract disagreements, as KING5 reported.

Following a late night of discussions that wrapped up after 1 a.m. today, the Yelm Education Association (YEA) expressed through a Facebook post their intention to hold a general membership meeting to vote on ratification "sometime Tuesday morning," provided a tentative agreement is reached today. However, as the teachers strike, it remains the responsibility of the district to decide when school will ultimately commence for the week, an action necessitated by the district's interest in resolving, according to Yelm Online.

The delayed notification of the postponement, initially expected yesterday, was not communicated to families until after 7 a.m. today. Details regarding the specifics of the contractual discord have not been disclosed.
