Tragedy struck early Thursday morning in Montgomery County when a chicken coop caught fire, leading to the death of 20 chickens. According to a WKRN report, Montgomery County Fire Service was called to a structure fire around 6:08 a.m. in the 3800 block of Dailey Road in Woodlawn.
The homeowners were the first to notice the blaze outside, swiftly making the 911 call that brought firefighters to the scene. As reported by the Montgomery County Fire Service Facebook page, upon their arrival, emergency crews were faced with a shed under a carport fully engulfed in flames, which was later identified as a chicken coop.
Despite the quick response and efforts of Station 19 units, no human injuries were reported, but the loss of poultry was unfortunate. The Clarksville Now coverage confirmed that the structure was indeed a chicken coop and twenty of the birds perished in the fire.
The cause of the fire, believed by the officials, was a heat lamp. Connected by an extension cord that ran from the house to the coop, the heat lamp represents an often-overlooked hazard in the maintenance of such structures. A reminder that when dealing with animals and their habitats, the use of electrical devices demands caution and supervision.
