In a tragic development following a violent altercation in El Cajon, a 71-year-old man has died after being stabbed in early October. Steven Barron, the victim, was initially hospitalized for a stab wound to his torso but did not survive his injuries, passing away last Saturday. The El Cajon Police Department, responding to a 911 call, found Barron in distress on October 5, around 9:15 PM, in the 800 block of Benedict Ave, as the City of El Cajon reported.
Officers apprehended the suspect, Gregory Carlomagno, after a pursuit on foot that included a failed attempt at carjacking a passerby. While fleeing from officers, the homeless man, aged 44, has a criminal record that includes a conviction for elder abuse. Having been on felony probation for grand theft at the time of the incident, Carlomagno is currently being held at San Diego County Central Jail.
The circumstances that led to the stabbing are still under scrutiny by detectives. According to the investigation, the paths of Barron and Carlomagno had crossed only recently. On the fateful day, Barron was giving Carlomagno a lift to a store when his vehicle broke down, which is when the incident reportedly occurred. However, the specific reasons prompting the attack are yet to be determined.
The investigation remains active, and the El Cajon Police Department calls upon anyone with information to step forward. As per the announcement on the city's official news site, those with knowledge about the case are encouraged to contact the authorities at (619) 579-3311.
