Aeromexico will resume daily flights between Phoenix and Mexico City next year after a break of over ten years. The route was last served by Aeromexico's regional subsidiary in 2014, and the new service reflects an increased focus on air connections between Arizona and Mexico. The flights are set to begin on March 30, 2025, and will use Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which offer two seating configurations with a capacity of 166 passengers in first and economy classes.
The new service addresses the absence of Aeromexico mainline flights in the Phoenix area, which has been in place since 2008, when operations were limited to flights from Hermosillo. While Aeromexico Connect continued until 2014, it eventually ceased operations, leaving American Airlines as the sole provider for this international route. According to azfamily, with the commencement of daily flights, the seat count on the route will increase to an estimated 10,000 in April 2025.
Flight schedules detailed by Simple Flying indicate a morning departure from Mexico City and a midday return from Phoenix, allowing for convenient day trips for business travelers or tourists. The MAX 8 aircraft will include WiFi and seatback screens, catering to the connectivity needs of travelers. In March, there will be 664 seats available across four flights prior to the start of daily services, indicating potential demand for the Phoenix route.
The announcement of this service highlights Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport's goal to expand its international carrier presence, which has progressed with the addition of airlines such as British Airways, Condor Airlines, and Air France. This aligns with the reported increase in U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico, which reached 36.71 million last year. The airline has also reestablished connections to other West Coast and Rockies cities like Las Vegas and Denver, indicating a broader strategy for network enhancement. This development may introduce competition with American Airlines, which has maintained a strong presence on the route for over two decades.
For travelers heading to Mexico City, attractions like the central Zócalo, Chapultepec Park, and the Frida Kahlo Museum are available to explore. Phoenix's renewed connection to Mexico's capital allows Arizonans and international visitors to access the historical and cultural offerings of one of the world's largest cities. As the service launch approaches, potential customers are anticipating a formal announcement from Aeromexico, which is expected according to coverage by aviation experts.
