The Royal Caribbean cruise ship Allure of the Seas docked at PortMiami today after an incident earlier in the week where a 66-year-old woman fell overboard near the Bahamas. As reported by NBC Miami, the woman went missing around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, when the ship was approximately 17 miles from Nassau.
A search-and-rescue operation was swiftly initiated to locate the woman, with Royal Caribbean stating they were collaborating with local authorities. Despite thorough searches throughout the night, the rescue attempts were unsuccessful. According to an interview with a passenger on the ship by CBS News, the search involved "all hands on deck," with boats and planes combing the waters until the early morning hours. Sadly, the search was suspended Wednesday afternoon.
This ill-fated cruise had a Taylor Swift theme, though it was not officially affiliated with the pop star. Called "In My Cruise Era," the fan-led group was traveling from Miami to the Bahamas. Planned activities included "Taylor Trivia" and theme nights inspired by Swift's music, as mentioned on the group's website, as per NBC Miami.
A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean stated, "We are also providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time." They emphasized their commitment to respecting the family's privacy by not sharing further details, according to a statement obtained by NBC Miami.
