On Wednesday, the City of Arlington celebrated a nod to the past as the Arlington Fire Department hosted a push-in ceremony for their latest addition, Truck 7, at Fire Station 7. Announced on the City of Arlington's Facebook page, the event featured Fire Chief Bret Stidham and Council Member Long Pham, who, alongside members of Station 7's C-shift, ceremoniously welcomed the new vehicle into service.
In a historical context, the gesture harks back to a time when firefighters, faced with the obstinate nature of horses that refused to reverse, had to resort to physical force to back their horse-drawn steam engines into the firehouse. Carrying this tradition into an era where technology has eclipsed the need for such physical exertions, today's firefighters honor their roots by pushing in new engines and trucks when they arrive for duty. Despite the modern engines being propelled by motors since the 19th century, this symbolic act has been preserved.
Even though the fire-fighting apparatuses have evolved, from steam-powered contraptions pulled by horses to state-of-the-art vehicles equipped with the latest technology, the push-in ritual remains a constant – a connection to the fire service's rich heritage. Not merely a nostalgic reenactment, it serves as an inaugural rite, a sort of passing of the torch, if you will, ensuring that each new piece of equipment is ushered in with a concerted sense of camaraderie and purpose.
