Atlanta is setting the stage for a key urban infrastructure overhaul, which has led to the temporary shutdown of Krog Street Tunnel. According to WSB-TV, the tunnel began closing nightly at 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting past Sunday and will continue through Friday. The reason behind the closure is a stormwater project aimed at locating tunnel columns crucial for the city's flood management. While vehicles are barred entry, the tunnel will remain accessible by foot on one side for pedestrians.
The city has anticipated the inconvenience caused by the closure; officials have released detour routes that will be necessary during this period. For westbound traffic on DeKalb Avenue NE, the detour navigates a right turn onto Krog Street NE, then a left onto Edgewood Avenue SE, another left onto Boulevard SE, and a final right onto Memorial Drive SE, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta. Similarly, eastbound traffic on Decatur Street SE and Wylie Street SE will follow a complementary set of detours.
As drivers face detours, traffic signs and barriers are in place to help them navigate safely around the construction area. The city advises motorists to drive carefully and expect longer commute times. Detour routes have been shared publicly, allowing those familiar with Atlanta's roads to plan their trips accordingly.
