Austin Opera is putting down new roots with the unveiling of a $7.5 million headquarters, featuring amenities that aim to deepen its operatic imprint in the city. Set to open in the fall of 2025, the expansive 16,000-square-foot space located at 5811 Trade Center Drive will include a 195-seat theater, rehearsal and teaching studios, a costume shop, and administrative offices, as reported by CBS Austin.
The organization, having made its administrative move this September, is slated to begin construction on the artistic wing in January 2025, which, after completion; aims to not only expand its artistic reach but also serve as a cultural hub for the Austin community. Austin Opera’s general director and CEO, Annie Burridge, highlighted the significance by stating, "I couldn’t be more excited to work with our community to build an inclusive new cultural hub for our thriving city," a sentiment captured by CBS Austin.
Philanthropists Sarah and Ernest Butler, who previously established a $3 million endowment for Spanish language programming, are the lead contributors for this capital campaign, having secured Austin Opera $3.67 million toward its $7.5 million fundraising goal. Reflecting on their contribution, the Butlers expressed pride in supporting Austin Opera, and according to Austin Culturemap, they said, “This new performance center, which will bear our names, will help secure a sustainable future for opera in Austin and enable numerous cultural institutions to extend their important work into the community.”
Once complete, the headquarters will not only consist of advanced infrastructure, like high ceilings suitable for large-scale rehearsals but also include an advanced A/V system. Music Director Timothy Myers told Austin Culturemap, that the center will fuel organizational ambition by enabling exploration into "new repertoire, performance formats, and genres."
