The Armadillo World Headquarters, an epicenter of Austin's music scene from 1970 to 1980, is now tapping into the nostalgia, and the pocketbooks of patrons with "Armadillo Forever," a pop-up venture nestled in the South Congress Hotel. Despite its close in 1980 due to burgeoning downtown development, the spirit of the venerated venue is being resurrected, not in the form of live music but as a lifestyle brand celebrating the city's rich musical heritage.
Echoing a bold mix of the past and future, the pop-up store doles out various memorabilia and products that tip a hat to Austin's artistic alchemy. According to KVUE, Nick Shuley, spokesperson for the Armadillo initiative, stressed, "This is not a nostalgia play; it’s a reimagining of what the Armadillo brand can be in today’s Austin."
True to its origins, "Armadillo Forever" is more than just a shop; it's a platform for local artists and musicians, with proceeds from sales going directly to the nonprofit All ATX to support the indigenous music scene. Apart from selling clothing, posters, and art, plans include film screenings, weekly live music events, and a documentary detailing the venue's history. KXAN reports the group behind the initiative pledges to give 100% of gross proceeds back to Austin music organizations.
Shuley emphasized the cultural imprint of the original HQ, "It was just a place where it didn’t matter who you were, didn’t matter what you looked like, didn’t matter what kind of music you liked, you just kind of went there and you knew it was going to be a good thing," as stated by KXAN. "Armadillo Forever" plans to stick around through the end of 2024.
