Austin's Nickel City bar is reviving its viral Simpsons-themed pop-up for an immersive Halloween experience. Starting Monday, October 14, this Central East Austin hotspot will transform into the beloved cartoon dive Moe's Tavern, complete with themed decor and a range of Simpsons-inspired activities and food pop-ups that will run until Halloween night on October 31.
Co-owner Travis Tober was taken aback by the initial success of the pop-up, telling CultureMap, "We didn’t expect it blow up so huge last year." The event saw coverage across major news platforms and enjoys a prominent online presence. This year's iteration promises a full-blown Simpsons extravaganza complete with an array of Easter eggs for fans, including a possible appearance of Spider-Pig, according to Tober in an interview with Eater Austin.
Patrons can look forward to unique offerings such as Flaming Moe (or Flaming Homer) cocktails, and the onsite food truck Delray Cafe transforming into the Krusty Burger. Simpsons themes can also be found in the events they've got lined up such as a special service by Toshokan’s Saine Wong, who will spin his version of the Simpsons’ Happy Sumo restaurant, hinting at indulging guests with a fugu-tailored menu. Tober notes, in the spirit of Halloween, those in Simpsons-themed attire will enjoy line-skipping privileges to enter the pop-up.
Beyond the usual suspects, patrons can expect new additions like Tony Curet, who will channel Chef Luigi from the series, serving pies through the pizza truck Side Eye Pie. In a singalong event painstakingly organized by the TX Emo Club, fans can belt out their best renditions of Sadgasm’s "Kisses Are Dirt". Meanwhile, an anticipated meet-and-greet session with former Simpsons showrunner and food writer Bill Oakley is on the calendar, as detailed by Eater Austin. Other special appearances include the Austin Oyster Co. team dressed like characters from the Simpsons seafood restaurant the Frying Dutchman.
New this year, the Cash Only window at Nickel City will host Instagrammer Not Just a Bartender’s Chris Leavitt making drinks with proceeds benefiting the Helen David Relief Foundation, a nod to the bar community's spirit in supporting its own. While supplies last, Simpsons aficionados are encouraged to hop on this whimsical bandwagon and partake in this nostalgia-fueled pop-up that offers a tangible dip into the world of Springfield.
