The Baltimore Police Department has been recognized for its commitment to officer safety and wellness. The department's Officer Safety and Wellness (OSW) section was honored with the 2024 Destination Zero National Officer Safety & Wellness Award, presented by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, acknowledging their outstanding efforts to foster a culture of comprehensive wellness for their employees.
In an award highlighting officer well-being's importance, as per the Baltimore Police press release, Commissioner Richard Worley expressed his pride in the team, stating, "Congratulations to Director Vernon Herron and our Officer Safety and Wellness section in being recognized for this prestigious award." He continued, recognizing the significance by saying, "Our department is committed to prioritizing the wellbeing of all our members, and the work and dedication of OSW is to be commended."
The Baltimore Police Department's announcement noted that the award celebrates initiatives that promote voluntary participation, increase departmental awareness, and strengthen employee engagement. It aims to spotlight law enforcement agencies that have excelled in establishing and promoting comprehensive officer safety and wellness programs.
The Destination Zero Award was established in 2014 to honor law enforcement agencies' officer safety and wellness endeavors. As part of its mission, the OSW supports officers in their physical, mental, financial, and spiritual needs, encompassing the Health and Wellness Unit, Early Intervention Unit, and Retiree/Employee Affairs Unit. The team's innovative approach has not only bolstered the well-being of BPD members but has also raised the bar for police departments nationwide.
The BPD's success in this area is also seen in its ability to meet the requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of Justice, as it was found to be in full and effective compliance with the Federal Consent Decree in January 2024.
