In their most recent report, the BART Police Department has revealed a 15% decrease in overall crime within the system through the end of August compared to last year's time frame. This positive trend includes a notable 10% decline in violent crime. The dip in crime rates has coincided with an upswing in ridership, with the transit system experiencing record numbers of passengers in September, largely due to major events like the Dreamforce conference and the Oakland A's final home games of the season. The full breakdown of these statistics can be read in the latest Chief's Report.

A statement by BART General Manager Bob Powers suggests that the crime reduction is an outcome of an aggressive initiative to bolster their Safe and Clean Plan, which aims to prioritize riders' safety and cleanliness concerns. "Our riders have been loud and clear that they want us to step our game up when it comes to their safety and the cleanliness of our system," Powers said, as per Bay Area Rapid Transit. "We have more work to do on behalf of our riders, but these numbers indicate our commitment to maximizing our visible safety presence is paying off." This plan involves increased sworn officers, Crisis Intervention Specialists, and Transit Ambassadors and the installation of Next Generation Fare Gates, successfully rolled out at seven stations thus far.

Officials have offered more insight into the declining crime rates. BART Police Chief Kevin Franklin stated, as per Bay Area Rapid Transit, "Since I became BART Police Chief one year ago, it has been my top priority to maximize the number of officers walking trains and patrolling our stations." According to Franklin's interview, the visibility of officers on the network has risen dramatically, and their proactive approach is successfully handling small issues before they escalate.
