In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and trust between law enforcement and the public, the Battle Ground Police Department in Southwest Washington has equipped its officers with body-worn cameras. As per a report by KGW, Chief Dennis Flynn believes that the introduction of this technology will provide a clear account of the officers' actions, reinforcing the community's right to understand police operations. "The truth is, the public pays for our service," Flynn said. "And they have a right to know what it is that we do.”

Funding for the body camera initiative includes approximately $67,000 from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) Body-Worn Camera Grant Program, alongside allocations from city resources. This financial investment into the 28-strong commissioned officer corps is a significant stride toward accountability, KATU reports. With body cameras becoming increasingly common in police departments nationwide, Battle Ground joins a growing list of municipal police forces seeking to document interactions and incidents comprehensively.

Chief Flynn also highlighted the preventive aspect of the devices, hoping they would serve as a deterrent to misconduct and provide indisputable evidence during critical incidents. "God forbid we have a critical incident," Flynn explained in a coverage by KPTV. "I want to make sure that we have footage that records that, we can see everything that happened that led up to it and certainly any type of use of force - we’ll have that recorded so the general public will be able to see exactly what the officers did."
