A substantial haul of narcotics, with an estimated street value surpassing $2.5 million, has been seized in a recent Bexar County drug bust. Sheriff Javier Salazar detailed the operation's outcome, revealing the confiscation of upwards of 66 pounds of meth and approximately 2.2 pounds of cocaine. Links to gang activities are under investigation but have yet to be confirmed.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputies initially stopped 38-year-old Isaac Israel Martinez Mendez at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Stonewall St. They discovered two kilos of meth in his vehicle. Following this lead, a search warrant executed at a home in the 700 block of Fitch Street uncovered the additional drugs and $20,000 in cash, according to News 4 San Antonio. Mendez and 39-year-old Alica Dominguez Garcia, the latter a US permanent resident, were both arrested in connection with the case.
Dealing with the grave threat posed by such significant quantities of illicit substances, both Mendez and Garcia face federal charges for conspiracy to distribute 10 kilos or more of a controlled substance. Salazar, in detailing the scope of the operation, suggested a potential gang link, stating, "You can assume, with this much drug ... in one place, there’s going to be gang ties, but at this point, we don’t have enough to say which organization," as per the sheriff’s announcement reported by KSAT.
While no weapons were discovered during the searches, the significant drug and cash seizure underscores a persistent struggle against the distribution of illegal drugs. The collaboration between BCSO, the San Antonio Police Department, and the Department of Public Safety indicates a continued multi-agency approach to tackling the issue head-on.
