Bexar County has partnered with DeafLink to provide sign language interpretation services at five voting precincts, enhancing access for deaf voters. This initiative, driven by the deaf community's advocacy over several years, aims to eliminate communication barriers at polling stations. As Kay Chiodo, CEO of DeafLink, explains, "When you go into a voting site, one of the first things they do is show you use the equipment. ‘Let me show you how,’ even that right there is a barrier for someone that requires sign language," according to KSAT.

Voters like Pastor Cassell Grice in a statement: "It was my first time basically here in San Antonio. (It) was the best experience I’ve had for my voting so far." He highlights the positive impact of such accommodations, noting that deaf individuals process information differently and traditional reading materials about candidates may not resonate with them in the same way, as shared by Grice and Chiodo, as per KSAT.

Texas has led the way in accessible voting systems for people with disabilities, becoming the first state to require that all new voting systems adopted since September 1, 1999, be accessible. These systems include various assistance features, such as headphones and other assistive devices, to help voters with disabilities cast their ballots independently and privately, as outlined on the VoteTexas website.

Texas ensures that all polling places meet strict accessibility standards, including entryway dimensions and curb access, as part of its commitment to support voters with disabilities. Voters needing assistance can choose anyone to help them vote, have the option to use interpreters, or can vote curbside if they cannot enter the polling place. This approach provides various options to ensure that every voter can participate in the electoral process, according to information from VoteTexas.
