Boca Raton police warned over the weekend that the area has become a target for a phone scam where criminals impersonate law enforcement officers. The city's residents received numerous scam calls, with the callers claiming to be police officers or other law enforcement, advising the person on the other end of a supposedly active arrest warrant. CBS12 reported that these scammers often use spoofed phone numbers that appear legitimate to lend credence to their false claims.

According to the reports, the scammers were persuasively demanding payment over the phone, specifically through money or gift cards, supposedly to clear the non-existent arrest warrant. The Boca Raton Police Department (BRPD) noted that the impostors may sound convincing and are known to even use real information about their targets, including real names of officers, to better sell their deceit. In a statement obtained by CBS12, the BRPD clarified that "The scammer may sound convincing and use real information about you and the real names of law enforcement officers to make the scam appear more credible," swiftly followed by a firm warning, "Don’t fall for it! It’s a scam!"

The Boca Raton Police Department used social media to raise awareness about the ongoing phone scam. Their post on Instagram warns followers and the community about scammers using fake numbers to impersonate law enforcement. The post urged people to stay alert and share the warning widely.

The police department warns that genuine law enforcement will never ask for money or gift cards over the phone. They emphasize that legitimate procedures do not involve phone-based transactions. Locals should report suspicious calls immediately. The BRPD's message aims to prevent people from falling victim to these scams and to demoralize scammers.
