Brentwood Assistant City Manager Jay Evans is set to become the president of the Tennessee City Management Association (TCMA) at the TCMA Fall Conference in Chattanooga this Wednesday. He will also serve on the Tennessee Municipal League's Board of Directors, marking an important step in his public service career.
Evans, who has over 20 years of experience in local governance, is taking on the TCMA presidency after serving as vice president. This leadership change comes as the importance of shared knowledge and collective experience in municipal administration is increasingly acknowledged. The TCMA, founded in 1964, currently represents 160 city and town managers across 85 local governments in Tennessee. According to a statement on the City of Brentwood's official website, Evans remarked on his appointment, "Being able to serve my fellow managers in advancing both professional management and good governance in Tennessee for next year is truly an honor."
Since joining Brentwood in 2013, Evans has overseen several departments, including Community Relations, Library, Parks, Public Works, and Water Services. His experience includes added responsibilities as Service Center Director after a 2021 reorganization, where he began managing essential city services.
Evans has extensive experience in leadership roles, including serving as City Manager in Leesburg, Florida. With 27 years in local government, he brings valuable insights and innovative solutions to TCMA. He holds a Political Science degree from Troy University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Central Florida, along with Certified Public Manager credentials from Florida State University. His involvement in organizations like the Rotary Club of Brentwood and the International City Manager’s Association reflects his commitment to community service and professional development.
As TCMA begins a new chapter under Evans' leadership, the focus will be on professional development and sharing best practices among Tennessee’s city managers. The association highlights the importance of educational conferences and timely information sharing, strengthening a network essential for the stability and effectiveness of municipal government in the state.
