Tempers flared postgame when Carolina Panthers defensive back Jaycee Horn accused Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton of bad sportsmanship, suggesting the coach was "trying to run the score up" during their latest matchup. According to 9News, the confrontation occurred during the traditional postgame handshake, leaving an evident sour taste despite the two-touchdown victory secured by the Broncos.
Not only did Horn voice his discontent, Panthers' safety Sam Franklin explicitly called Payton out for what he considered an attempt to "embarrass" the struggling Panthers, who had been reeling from a tough season and added another loss to their record that Sunday. The claim fired up by frustration after a 40-7 loss the previous week was reported by 247Sports, with the Panthers already marred by a disappointing 1-7 season start and now seemingly facing acts of disrespect on the field.
In the infamous fourth quarter, Payton drew the Panthers' ire with two trick plays, however, his mood was less than celebratory addressing his team's performance that despite securing the win was marred by several fumbles, like the one from Shy Tuttle that Carolina capitalized on for a rare lead. Broncos' head coach, Sean Payton expressed his concerns about not becoming complacent heading into future matches with tougher opponents stating, "We're going to see a lot better teams," this was included in his warning, as detailed by the Denver Post.
