Chapel Hill residents will need to find alternative swimming spots as the Homestead Aquatic Center gears up for a significant renovation. The town's popular swim facility will be shutting its doors on October 21, 2024, and isn't expected to reopen until early March 2025. The temporary closure is due to the replacement of two critical systems that have succumbed to the wear and tear of time. "We know this facility is important to our community, and the closure will be an inconvenience to so many who routinely use it,” Parks and Recreation Director Atuya Cornwell stated in a news release.
The upcoming renovations will unfold in phases, with officials hoping to resume operations earlier if possible. Patrons who frequent Homestead for their aquatic fix have been assured that during the downtime, they can dive into the Community Center indoor pool located at 120 S. Estes Dr. According to the town's announcement, the alternate pool will maintain operational hours from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 12 - 7 p.m. on Sundays.
The closure, while necessary for the center's longevity and the ability to provide continued exceptional service, will indeed pose immediate inconveniences. Park officials urge swimmers and patrons to adjust their schedules accordingly and to keep abreast of the latest schedule changes and reopening news. For more specific details regarding alternative swimming options during the renovation period, residents can visit the Aquatics Facilities page of the town's website or reach out directly to the Community Center at (919) 968-2790.
