It has been a year since the death of a 14-month-old boy in Charleroi, Washington County, and the parents are now facing charges in connection with the tragedy. Washington County District Attorney's Office confirmed that Brooke Whitehead and Ryan Whitehead both 32, are the accused parties in the horrific incident that unfolded on October 24, 2023. WTAE reported these developments following the official announcement.
According to the district attorney, upon police arrival at the family's Prospect Avenue residence, they found the child unresponsive. The boy was subsequently rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. As per WPXI, it was revealed that the cause of death was attributed to blunt force trauma to the head, torso, and extremities. Furthermore, the autopsy exposed disturbing evidence of recent skull fractures and long bone fractures that appeared to be at different stages of healing.
Brooke Whitehead faces several charges, the most serious of which is criminal homicide, whereas Ryan Whitehead is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. These details emerged as the district attorney unpacked the extent of the allegations against the parents. The officers who first responded to the scene were alerted to "markings" on the child which were documented as bruises spread across the child's face, neck, and chest, details that underline the severity of the alleged neglect and abuse.
The criminal complaint indicates that Brooke was the only adult present at the time of the child's passing, but the lingering injuries suggest that the child had also been in Ryan's care when some of the other injuries occurred.
