A recent fatal motorcycle crash is currently under investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit. The incident occurred in the Hickory Grove Division on Friday, October 11, 2024, and involved a motorcycle and a pickup truck, according to official department release.

At the center of the investigation is a collision that took place shortly before 7:30 p.m. at the 8000 block of Lawyers Road. Preliminary findings suggest the motorcyclist, identified as 46-year-old Thomas Kardos, III, was traveling northwest on Lawyers Road at a speed above the posted limit. Kardos’ motorcycle, a 2007 Honda Shadow VT750, struck a 2024 Dodge Ram 2500 Big Horn attempting a left turn onto Harri Ann Drive. The crash left the motorcycle partially under the pickup truck and caused extensive damage to the front end of the truck. Tragically, Kardos was pronounced deceased at the scene by MEDIC, who responded alongside the Charlotte Fire Department.

The driver of the pickup, 28-year-old Mr. Angel Sanchez Medina, did not sustain injuries in the crash and cooperated with authorities at the scene. As detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit, along with the DWI and Street Racing Task Forces, delve into the circumstances of the crash, they are assisted by members of the Crime Scene Search team in collecting physical evidence. The community has been asked to aid in the investigation as well, with Detective Leung being the point of contact for witnesses or those possessing pertinent information about the case, as detailed in the public statement by CMPD.

Toxicology results for Mr. Kardos are pending, which may shed further light on the crash's contributing factors. CMPD has made sure that the next of kin of Mr. Kardos were notified about his death. As the active investigation proceeds, the CMPD's Public Affairs Division promises additional information as it develops.
