In a troubling incident during a youth baseball game in Cutler Bay, children had to flee as gunfire erupted near Franjo Park on Monday evening. According to Local 10 News, families enjoying dinner were interrupted by shots fired around 8 p.m. at 20175 Franjo Road, prompting a scramble for safety. While no children were injured, two adult males were found with gunshot wounds at an Amoco gas station. They were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and taken to a hospital, but are reportedly not cooperating with the investigation.
Daniela Madrid, a local whose father's car was hit by bullets in the incident, told NBC Miami about her experiences: "I would be coming home late from work and then I would see like a group of them, I don't know if they were friends, I don't know if they were family, but it was like a large group of them, I'm assuming that they were affiliated with what was going on because when I would come home they would have ski masks on." This tense atmosphere escalated when witnesses reported seeing individuals in black ski masks shooting at each other while moving through Old Cutler and Franjo roads.
Barbara Mesa told Local 10 News, "We walk every morning and we see less and less policemen viewing the area, and it concerns me. I have a grandson that is 9. We wanted him to play baseball, and it’s concerning that there are so many children here all the time."
Recognizing the close call for the community, authorities are still seeking to arrest a suspect. They are investigating the motive behind the shooting but face challenges due to uncooperative victims, which may hinder efforts to quickly apprehend those responsible and restore peace in the area.
