A worship leader at a Clay County church has been arrested in connection with a series of sex crimes involving a minor, local law enforcement agencies disclosed in recent reports. Jeremiah Paul Grover, 32, previously employed at Elevate Life Church in Oakleaf Plantation, faces charges including unlawful sexual activity with a minor and lewd and lascivious conduct after a three-month investigation that began in June.
According to First Coast News, the investigation, which has been ongoing since July, revealed that Grover engaged in sexual activities with a 16-year-old member of the congregation he led in worship and they met in both Clay and Duval counties where the alleged sexual criminal conduct occurred, and his bond has been set at $325,015. Simultaneously saying to have swiftly addressed the matter when initially made aware of Grover's conduct months prior, the church claims to have terminated his employment within hours of learning about his actions, also notifying Child Protective Services and local police.
Members of Elevate Life Church expressed dismay at the news of the arrest; most declined to comment further though a church employee, preferring anonymity, admitted to being shocked by Grover's alleged behavior and did not recognize his name, as per an interview by Action News Jax. "Our heart breaks for any person who is a victim of such abuse," stated Mark Mellen, the Chief Financial Officer of Elevate Life Church, as he outlined the church's commitment to both spiritual care and maintaining a safe environment through preemptive safety measures, including background checks and training protocols.
In a statement obtained by News4Jax, a former Director of Investigations at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Tom Hackney, commended the church for its swift action in reporting the allegations, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in such grave matters stating "These are crimes that need to be investigated, and the suspects of these crimes need to be held accountable." Meanwhile, the Clay County Sheriff's Office urges anyone with further information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
Grover, currently held in Clay County Jail, awaits further legal proceedings with the authorities encouraging community members to reach out to the Special Victims Unit at 904-264-6512 or submit tips through the Safer Watch App for those with pertinent information regarding the case.
