A fire has erupted at a Clearwater scrap metal recycling facility, reportedly incited by appliance debris left in the wake of recent hurricanes. The blaze at the building, situated on 2032 Gentry Street, It was first reported just after noon yesterday, according to WFLA. Clearwater Fire & Rescue are on the scene and expect the fire to persist for an extended duration. The department has not forecasted a swift conclusion to their firefighting efforts.
In light of this incident, authorities have urged the public to adhere to proper disposal protocols for hazardous materials. As ABC Action News reports, Pinellas County Solid Waste offers a no-cost option for residents at the Household Hazardous Waste Center, located at 2855 109th Avenue North, St. Petersburg. The facility opens its doors from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays and the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Specific guidelines have been set for large lithium-ion batteries, which, due to concerns about their volatility and the special procedures required for their handling, necessitate processing by private-sector recycling companies. These items include batteries from cars, lawnmowers, and electric bikes, especially those that may have been affected by recent storm activity.
Moreover, for accommodating the safe disposal of household chemicals, the county has organized collection events. "Residents can take hazardous chemicals and items to Pinellas County Solid Waste for proper recycling and disposal," reminded fire rescue crews, as was reported by FOX 13 News. These events are held at 29582 U.S. 19 North, Clearwater, on select Saturdays, upcoming dates include Oct. 26, Nov. 23, and Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
