Cleveland is grappling with a surge in street takeovers that brought the city into chaos. Police are now sifting through a host of tips following a spree of illegal street racing and stunts that occurred last weekend. In one incident, captured by a FOX8, an officer in his vehicle was surrounded and assaulted by an unruly crowd as he attempted to intervene during a street takeover at Lee and Miles.
The city's officials are pushing for stricter penalties in response to the takeovers, including street racing and instances where intersections and the Innerbelt Bridge were blocked by vehicles and crowds. The events had a disturbing tone, as the assailants appeared undeterred by the presence of law enforcement. According to the same FOX8 report, an off-duty officer was also beaten, and residents who called 911 lamented a lack of prompt police response.
In an intense video obtained by NEWS 5, an officer is recorded calling for backup after being swarmed by the crowd, “Hey! I’ve got people jumping on my car. Get me cars up here now!" This footage offers a stark glimpse into the danger officers faced as spectators turned hostile, attacking the police vehicle.
Amidst this turmoil, the Cleveland City Council has introduced new legislation to combat such incidents, as reported by Cleveland19. The legislation proposes to prohibit stunts like burnouts, doughnuts, and drifting and allows for the seizure of "vehicle components" from those involved in street takeovers. Echoing the concerns of his colleagues, Ward 8 Councilman Mike Polensek condemned the actions of the "street outlaws" and emphasized the need for swift and decisive action to restore order and safety to the city's streets.
