The Denver Broncos' Cody Barton has been recognized as the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his standout performance in last Thursday's game against the New Orleans Saints. Barton, an inside linebacker, contributed significantly to the team's 33-10 victory with a fumble recovery for a 52-yard touchdown although another score of his was negated due to a teammate's penalty, as mentioned in The Denver Post.
During the game that positioned him for this accolade, Barton made eight tackles with six of those being solo, notched one sack, and defended a pass, he became the 32nd player in Broncos history to be given this weekly honor since its inception in 1984 according to KDVR, the specifics of Barton's achievement also included his exceptional distinction of being one of few to have a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery touchdown in a single game for the Broncos since 1982.
"Today, I feel like it was kind of my day," Barton said following the game, and "Some of those bigger splash plays came my way," emphasizing the unpredictability and collective strength of the defense as a whole, as obtained by 9NEWS. The Denver Post also captured Barton's sentiments when he said, "If this game’s tomorrow, you don’t know who it’s going to be. That’s how this defense is, and it’s a lot of fun."
A native of Salt Lake City, Barton was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 and has since become a key piece of the Broncos' defensive unit after signing as an unrestricted free agent in the off-season, he has appeared in all seven games this season, making a start in four of those and has tallied 45 tackles, 23 solo tackles, and a sack to his season statistics, over his 85 career games, he has accumulated 360 tackles, 201 solo tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, and 10 passes defended. He has also recorded one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries as per statistics, according to KDVR.
