Residents of Colorado Springs who are keen to voice their opinions at city council meetings will soon need to set their alarms a little earlier. Starting November 12, the Colorado Springs City Council has committed to permanently change their meeting times, moving both Work Sessions and Regular Meetings forward to a 9:00 a.m. start. While previously these meetings typically began at 10:00 a.m., the new schedule is intended to more efficiently accommodate Citizen Discussion for Items not on the agenda.
The shift is a direct response to the Council receiving an uptick in community engagement on a variety of topics. It aims to provide a stable window for Citizen Discussion, so individuals can better plan their daily schedules without prolonged uncertainty about when they can engage with their elected officials.
According to the City of Colorado Springs, City Council President Randy Helms expressed that the council "values and encourages our citizens to come and speak to City Council." He added, "With this change, we can better serve our constituents by giving them a more stable time so they can continue with their day instead of waiting to speak to Council."
Given the importance of civic engagement and transparency, such adjustments in council meeting times reflect an attempt by the city administration to foster an environment where public discourse can thrive. The Regular Meetings are set to occur on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, and the Work Session will take place on the preceding Monday. Residents interested in staying updated with the most current meeting times should keep an eye on the City Council calendar of events, available on the city's official website.
