Early this morning, a contractor's misjudgment led to the shutdown of I-96 in both directions near Beck Road. A truck struck an overhead sign, resulting in a gravel spill and the subsequent need for road closure to facilitate cleanup and sign removal. FOX 2 Detroit reported that the incident occurred around 6:45 a.m., leaving the roadway closed for approximately three hours.
The closure allowed crews to address the aftermath of the contractor hitting the sign on the eastbound side, which was reported by many commuters. During the time of the incident, traffic was directed onto alternative routes such as Grand River Avenue and the detour involving 12 Mile, according to information obtained by CBS Detroit. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) estimated the freeway would not reopen until around 2:30 p.m.
Further details provided by hometownlife indicated that one lane of eastbound I-96 near Beck Road was open in the morning, though MDOT issued a release at 9:35 a.m. stating that a complete closure would be necessary. This was to ensure the safe removal of the overhead sign and clean up the gravel debris.
Suggested detours while the cleanup efforts were underway included Grand River Avenue for eastbound traffic and a combination of 12 Mile and Grand River for westbound traffic. Affected ramps such as the northbound I-275 ramp to WB I-96 and the southbound M-5 ramp to westbound I-96 were closed, which was necessitated by the crews working diligently to reopen the freeway, with detours being swiftly established by MDOT for the ease of diverted traffic.
