Last Friday marked the end of an era for the City of Coppell as Derwood Scott, a 37-year veteran dedicated to public service, retired from his position as Terminal Agency Coordinator. With a history that included roles as a public safety telecommunicator for both CPD and CFD, as well as a two-year stint as a volunteer firefighter in Coppell, Scott's career was celebrated for its longevity and impact.
A constant presence in the throes of emergency response, Scott was well-known for his deep, monotone voice, a calm amidst the storms of crises. A particularly unique tradition included his distinctive cue, "Let's go now," which was known to signify the urgency of a call. According to the Coppell Police Department, this was everyone's warning that something serious was about to unfold.
The breadth of Scott's career saw him serve under nine police chiefs and witness a multitude of new faces enter the department doors. At his retirement ceremony, CFD Chief Richardson paid tribute by donning the same CFD uniform worn back in 1987 when Scott began his career, an acknowledgment of the passage of time and the endurance of service.
