
A Cuyahoga County Sheriff's deputy was involved in a non-fatal shooting incident downtown Cleveland yesterday night, officials have confirmed. The encounter occurred at approximately 10 p.m. at the intersection of Superior Avenue and East 26th Street as fans were departing from Progressive Field following the Guardians' victory over the New York Yankees, according to reports from WKYC. Witnesses reported seeing a chase involving a white-colored SUV that ended in a crash near the entrance and exit ramps to Interstate 90. Shots were heard as individuals purportedly fled the scene on foot.
A 15-year-old boy was taken seriously injured to MetroHealth Medical Center, with cleveland.com indicating the extent of his injuries remains unclear. Authorities stated that other individuals possibly connected to the incident have been taken into custody, though details have yet to emerge fully. The deputy involved in the shooting was also evaluated medically at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital and has been released.
In a brief press statement, the Sheriff's Office also confirmed the deployment of officers in the area as road sections of Superior Avenue from East 24th to East 30th were closed down. Cleveland Police has been designated to undertake the investigation concerning the use of deadly force during this incident, as noted by a county spokesperson in statements obtained by Cleveland19 News.
