Lucas Appleton, a server at the Hampton Social in Delray Beach, is set to lose about $1,000 a month after the restaurant implemented a new service charge policy. According to WPTV, a 20% service charge added to customer bills will not be fully passed on to the employees. Instead, workers like Appleton will only receive 18% while the restaurant keeps the remainder for expenses.

Appleton expressed that the new payment model is bound to create a significant gap for industry workers, many of whom live from paycheck to paycheck. "It’s going to change up my budget a lot," Appleton told WPTV. He elaborated on his concerns about fulfilling daily needs and managing rent costs in the current economy, suggesting that the restaurant's new policy is coming as a blow during times when expenses continually rise.

Discontent has spread across the chain's locations, with similar protests reported in Orlando and Naples. Appleton accuses the Hampton Social of misleading customers by suggesting that the full service charge goes toward staff compensation. Diner Bill Riley expressed his disappointment upon learning the truth, stating, "I think it’s all about full disclosure." He felt misled and indicated that such practices could keep him from returning to the establishment, as per FOX 29 report.

Ted Rossman, a senior industry analyst at Bankrate.com, indicated that surcharges are increasingly adopted by restaurants. "Surcharges are kinda a hidden way to raise prices without raising prices," Rossman remarked in his analysis given to FOX 29, pointing out the potential for such charges to result in reduced tipping as customers may confuse them for gratuity. The establishment in question is referenced as part of Parker Hospitality, and as per reports, their corporate representative opted to refrain from commenting when approached.

A closer look at the restaurant's ownership confirms that Brad Parker from Chicago is associated with Hampton Social Club, sharing the same address listed for Parker Hospitality.
