Alberto Mota, a 42-year-old Denver man, has been handed a 10-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a series of charges stemming from a road rage assault that took place in Douglas County in 2020. According to Denver7, District Court Judge Ryan Stuart delivered the sentence on Monday, with Mota convicted on accounts including vehicular assault and reckless endangerment.
The incident, which occurred on August 16, 2020, involved Mota, driving a Ford F-250 with his daughter onboard, aggressively maneuvering into a group of motorcyclists on Interstate 25 who had previously passed him, as per CBS Colorado. The action resulted in a motorcyclist being pushed into a concrete barrier, and suffering significant injuries including a broken leg, ribs, and collarbone.
Footage of the violent encounter, which showed the truck changing lanes without signaling and ramming into the motorcycle, was turned over to the authorities, establishing the assault as intentional. This visual evidence contradicted Mota's initial denial of involvement in the road rage incident. "He chose to endanger the lives of numerous people on the road that day because of his anger," Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth Desits said, as obtained by KDVR.
At the time of the crash, Mota was driving without a valid license, a fact compounded by his history of multiple convictions for the same offense dating back to 2001. With the demographic of vulnerable children in the vehicle at the time of the crash, the gravity of his reckless disregard for safety becomes chillingly obvious. His history and the presence of his daughter in the truck were factors considered in the sentencing. The case marks a cautionary tale against the backdrop of increasing road rage incidents.
