As downtown Houston's skyline continues to morph, two significant hotel projects signify the fervent revival of the area, one of which will even transform the vicinity of Minute Maid Park into a year-round entertainment hub. The first project, a dual-branded Holiday Inn Express/Staybridge Suites at 1319 Texas Ave. has recently achieved a construction milestone. According to the Houston Chronicle, the edifice reached its final height of 204 feet in a topping out ceremony last week.
Neway Hospitality, the Sugar Land-based developer, stated "We're halfway there," reflecting on the progress since breaking ground on the hotel in early October 2023, as reported by Ali Momin, president of the company. Not simply content with hotel rooms, this development is set to include an Urban Street Market grocery to cater to both hotel guests and local residents. "There’s thousands of apartments around our hotel and they’re lacking a grocery store" Momin said. According to the Houston Chronicle, the aim is for completion and opening in October 2025, with window installations on the upper floors anticipated to commence by January.
Meanwhile, adjacent to the Astros' home field, plans to develop a multifaceted hotel and entertainment district are unfolding. Giles Kibbe, the Astros' senior vice president and general counsel, detailed a scheme for a 17-story, 300-room hotel that will be knitted into an array of retail and dining spaces, complemented by a sizeable public area designed for mass viewing of sporting events. "It's a big project for us," Kibbe told Houston Public Media, with an expected groundbreaking in November of next year.
The upcoming district, a private investment by Jim Crane and other Astros owners, will span a 2-acre layout southwest of Minute Maid Park. This space is pegged for more than just an off-season attraction; its design, inspired by similar MLB-adjacent developments and possibly featuring sky bridges connecting to the ballpark, is meant to entice visitors throughout the year. The outdoor big screen planned for the district intends to display more than just baseball—"the venue also could host live music performances," according to Kibbe, and becoming the preferred public spot for various events is a clear aspiration, as detailed by Houston Public Media.
PA Hospitality is also close to finishing up their own 221-room, dual-branded hotel nearby, bringing a new Home2 Suites by Hilton and Tru by Hilton closer to Houston's bustling city life. With the concerted flurry of new constructions, downtown Houston appears set to become an even more vibrant destination for locals and tourists alike, looking to soak in the city's burgeoning hotel hospitality and entertainment offerings.
