A traffic mishap on Northpointe Boulevard has led to more serious charges for one driver. Eric Dustin Shanks was taken into custody last week after deputies arrived at the scene of a single-car crash in the 11500 block. Officers noted Shanks showed clear signs of intoxication and subsequently failed sobriety tests, Constable Mark Herman's Office reports.

Shanks was unable to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and, according to deputies, admitted to using cocaine and marijuana. In what became a routine inventory of Shanks’ vehicle, deputies discovered cocaine and a loaded handgun. While the arrest for driving under the influence could have perhaps been anticipated, the presence of drugs, and more disturbingly, a firearm, escalates the gravity of the incident.

Following the findings, "Eric Shanks was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, for Driving While Intoxicated, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon. His total bond was set at $2,700.00 out of the 232nd District Court and County Court 7,” said Constable Mark Herman in a Facebook post.
