In the latest update from the Department of Justice, Jose Luis Lugo, 40, of Kissimmee, has entered a guilty plea for the illegal possession of firearms. As reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, Lugo, a convicted felon and registered sex offender, now faces up to 15 years in federal prison. His sentencing is scheduled for December 18.

This conviction stems from July 2023 incidents where Lugo was caught on two separate occasions possessing and selling firearms. Despite previous felony convictions in 2004, 2005, 2014, and as recent as 2022, Lugo flouted federal laws prohibiting felons from bearing arms. According to court documents, these violations did not escape the eyes of local law enforcement officers.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives took the lead in the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Nate will oversee the prosecution's progress. This case also falls under the purview of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at decreasing gun violence and promoting safer communities across the United States.
