The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is facing significant changes as it embarks upon its "Destination District Redesign" initiative, which includes the proposed closure of ten elementary schools due to enrollment challenges. On Thursday, during a district meeting, EPISD released a list of the potentially affected schools as part of a sweeping redesign aimed at addressing these challenges. The schools under consideration for closure by the start of the 2025-26 school year are Carlos Rivera, Hillside, Lamar, Newman, Park, Putnam, Rusk, Stanton, Travis, and Zavala Elementary Schools, according to KFOX-TV.

With a total of 48 elementary and pre-K through fifth-grade schools in the district, this proposal, if approved, would result in the closure of about a fifth of these institutions. The ten schools recommended for closure span various regions of El Paso, including West, Central, and Northeast areas of the city, as detailed by El Paso Times. The intention behind the closures is to streamline district operations amid diminishing student numbers.

Much concern has been expressed by parents and community members over the proposed closures and how decisions are being made. "Without that information, it’s very hard as parents to actually engage and have a conversation with the district about what priorities we have. Instead, we’re kind of reduced to just picking flavors of ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. Whereas I think being involved in the process (requires) establishing what flavors are available and how can we help do that? That’s what we want to accomplish," said one parent, Schulte, who is also a member of Amanecer People’s Project, as noted by KTSM. The organization has been pushing for EPISD to make improvements such as installing refrigerated air across all its campuses.

The EPISD has yet to make a final decision on the school closures, and the community feedback phase indicates that the district will have to navigate parent concerns carefully, as stakeholders seek more transparency and involvement in the processes that will shape the future of their children's education. The final vote on the matter is approaching, though no specific date has been given. The potential impact on students and educators remains at the forefront of discussions, with many emphasizing the importance of a thoughtful and collaborative approach, as noted in public statements and community responses to the possible changes.
