A fatal car accident in Catawba County this morning claimed the life of an elderly man. According to WBTV, the crash occurred around 8:50 a.m. on US 321 Business near Smyre Farm Road. The victim was identified as 83-year-old Jimmie Earl Yancey from Maiden.

Troopers informed that Yancey's vehicle, a 2018 Nissan Rogue, was found after it had run off the side of the road and collided with a tree. Master Trooper Casey stated that Yancey was declared dead at the scene. The road was temporarily closed to quickly proceed with the investigation, which disrupted traffic flow for about two hours, as reported by WSOC-TV.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the details of the crash. Reports from WHKY and other sources haven’t explained why Yancey veered off the road. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed or impairment were not factors in the accident.
