In a late-night turn of events, Elk Grove Police Department officers busted a vehicle burglary in the sleepy enclave of Romanzo Way, jolting an otherwise tranquil community with the drama of a short-lived chase. According to a Facebook post by the Elk Grove Police Department, officers responded to the incident at approximately 2:55 a.m. on a Tuesday morning.
The episode unfolded with the launching of a drone after the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Vertrail Payne, was spotted departing the scene and entering his own vehicle. Despite efforts to apprehend Payne, a brief car chase erupted when he refused to comply with the officers' orders. Eventually, he abandoned his vehicle to continue his escape on foot, as reported by the Elk Grove Police Department.
However, true to its purpose, the aerial surveillance continued to play a pivotal role as the drone tracked Payne to his temporary hideout on a freeway off ramp. Even as the suspect persisted, ducking into an empty vehicle at a nearby business, technology kept pace, relentlessly shadowing his every move. The relentless pursuit culminated with Payne surrendering after he was cornered by officers, as per the Elk Grove Police Department.
Ultimately, the authorities were successful in retrieving all the stolen property belonging to the victim. Following the incident, Payne was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He faces several felony charges, including evading and vehicle burglary. According to the Elk Grove Police Department, he’s being held on $1,000,000 bail.
