The event, aptly named Haunt the Block, promises to capture the essence of this revered Mexican holiday with an array of activities and displays set to unfold on Smith Street. Mariposas de Mansfield announced the upcoming celebration amidst growing anticipation for a culturally rich and educational experience, according to the Mansfield Commission for the Arts.
The Dia de los Muertos—or Day of the Dead—event is far from your average Halloween spook fest it's a day steeped in tradition, honoring ancestors and loved ones who've passed away, according to Mariposas de Mansfield's social media announcement it's sprinkled with art installations, traditional music, and meticulously crafted altars. The festival has been designed to offer locals and visitors alike a taste of the holiday's rich heritage and the importance it holds in Latino culture. With everyone invited to participate in the celebrations, Haunt the Block is poised to be a vibrant, community-centric gathering.
In a nod to the event's authenticity, attendees can expect to encounter a swell of traditional elements ranging from sugar skulls—known as Calaveras—to intricate papel picado decorations, showcasing the artistry characteristic of Dia de los Muertos observances. Participants will also be encouraged to bring photographs of deceased loved ones to create a communal ofrenda, or offering, which is a central component of the holiday meant to welcome the spirits back to the realm of the living for a brief visit.
